Smarter Robots, Better People

I once hoped that generative artificial intelligence (AI) might leave manufacturing, which bore the brunt of the last wave of automation, relatively unscathed. It appears this hope was in vain. While knowledge workers appear to be the most AI-exposed occupations, advances in AI-driven robotics are accelerating and will likely have significant impacts on a wide variety of physical tasks and jobs, too.

Systems like GigaBrain and Google DeepMind’s RoboCat—so-called “world models”—are helping robots build internal representations that let them imagine and rehearse actions virtually before executing them, thus reducing the need for real-world data collection and labeling along with time-intensive training runs on physical systems.

Ultimately, a world model gives the robot a kind of mental simulator. It can predict the outcomes of actions, run thousands of virtual experiments overnight, and apply the most successful strategies to real-world tasks. Recent work shows that simulation-guided methods can substantially reduce real-world data required for training. What once took weeks of manual calibration can now be done in hours, accelerating technological adoption into areas like logistics, healthcare, agriculture, and retail.

In logistics, emerging systems trained on simulated warehouses can now handle “open-box” variation: different sizes, weights, and packaging, previously beyond their capability. In hospitals, pilot programs are testing systems trained with synthetic data to learn safe patient-handling routines. Even some small manufacturers can now afford collaborative robots (cobots) that arrive nearly “pre-trained” for assembly or inspection tasks.

So, where does this leave the humans currently performing these tasks? Historically, when machines take on routine execution, humans tend to move into roles that provide oversight, customization, and troubleshooting. As the “learning burden” shifts from humans to machines, people take on meta-work: designing processes, setting safety parameters, monitoring performance, and ethically responding to edge cases. 

These higher-order human roles require new skill sets: systems thinking, data interpretation, maintenance, and safety auditing. In a warehouse using semi-autonomous pickers, for example, workers may no longer walk miles each day pulling items. Instead, they will manage workflow optimization, fix mis-grips, and recalibrate sensors. Physical demands decline while cognitive ones rise.

Preparing for an AI-driven future is at once simple and complicated. It is simple in the sense that we know what the general pattern of work will look like: machines taking over mundane tasks while humans spend most of their time at higher levels of analysis and strategy. The complicated part is that learning those higher level skills is less a matter of classroom or even laboratory training and more about educating for tacit skills like flexibility and abstraction. 

As machines take on more of the doing, the human role moves toward understanding and decision-making—seeing systems whole, anticipating problems, and ensuring AI-driven outcomes align with human ends. Oversight is not lesser work; it is a more human type of work that incorporates higher levels of curiosity, judgment, empathy, and care. In other words, an AI-driven world may be a more humane one.
