Problem
Too many graduate students incur high student loan debt for degrees that lead to jobs with low pay relative to their debt. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act limited most graduate students to $100,000 in aggregate student loan debt but allowed students pursuing “professional degrees” a $200,000 limit. Some lawmakers are trying to expand the programs included under the definition of professional degrees. However, if anything, too many programs are covered—programs eligible for high loan limits but leading to jobs that typically lack the high salaries enjoyed by doctors, lawyers, and other professionals.
Solution
Drop theology, chiropractic, and clinical psychology degrees from the definition of “professional degrees.” Rename “professional” degrees “high-debt” degrees.
