Cities and Severe Mental Illness: The Challenge in New York City and Los Angeles

In 2022, New York City Mayor Eric Adams introduced measures to remedy the ongoing crisis of individuals with severe mental illnesses left untreated and unsheltered. Have his efforts been successful?

Join AEI Senior Fellow Sally Satel, the Adams administration’s senior adviser on severe mental illness, a director of a Bronx-based homeless shelters network, and a retired New York City police captain as they discuss the basic workings and philosophy of New York City’s new approach, the politics of initiating and maintaining such an effort, and the impact thus far. A member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will present additional perspectives on Los Angeles’s mentally ill and homeless population. The panel will distill lessons for large urban centers that are grappling with similar problems.
